Introduction:
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge, the largest bridge in Bangladesh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on June 25. She called the bridge “a symbol of pride” for the country. The Padma Bridge is one of the dream project of Bangladesh. It is a multipurpose road and rail bridge over the Padma River.
Padma Bridge Construction Project:
The length of proposed Padma Bridge will be 6.15 km. The bridge is being built in Mawa in Munshiganj and Janzira in Shariatpur. It will connect Louhajong in Munshiganj to Shariatpur and Madaripur district, linking northern and eastern regions to south-west of the country. The bridge will have a total of 42 pillars. Among which, 40 will be in the river and the two others will be in approach roads for connecting bridge. Each will have 6 piles beneath in the river for every pillar, in total 240 piles.
Design and Structure:
The bridge will be approximately 6.15km long and 18.10m wide. It will be a double-deck composite steel truss structure and will use 41 pieces. The main spans will be 150m long. The upper deck will contain a four lane highway, while the lower deck will house a rail line. gas transmission pipeline, optic fiber cable and power transmission lines.
Financing:
The donor agencies including World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and the JICA promised a loan of 1.9 billion USD for the project. But the loan was canceled by the donors on the allegation of corruption conspiracy against former Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain. However, the government dismissed the World Bank’s allegation and decided to construct the bridge through its own fund. The whole project cost is estimated to be US 3.868 Billion (Including VAT and IT).
Expected Benefits from Padma Bridge:
Development of farmer and farming means development of country. The accessibility of good communication brought by Padma Bridge will play important role in the development of farming and farmers. It will help raise employment by 10.2 percent in the southwest region by boosting farming activities, especially vegetable production.
Road communication is considered the life of industrial development. This is because a better transportation and communication system is a prerequisite for the availability of raw materials and to market the finished products. So undeniably Padma Bridge will improve the industrial development.
Padma Bridge will help with the expansion of industrialization, commercial activities and transport system. It will facilitate more employment opportunities. As a result some people out of about two crore unemployed people of Bangladesh will get work.
